LoganDate of Submission: July 31th, 2014IntroductionDue to the task of rising living standard in the Greater Glasgow, Scottish Water has launched a project to study the quality of water in the reservoirs supplying Glasgow. The project leader believed that the water quality should be highest when the surface area of a reservoirs is small. However, the Scottish Water Director seemed to be unsatisfied with the conclusion of the project leader due to the lack of statistical analysis. Subsequently, a statistical investigation has been started. The investigation data was gathering from 49 reservoirs with fresh drinkable water in different location around Glasgow. In addition, the criterion 'Index of B iotic Integrity' or IBI has been applied for the study to measure the water quality. The date have been demonstrated in two tables (see Appendix 1). Table 1 show IBI score of 24 "treatment" reservoirs where the water was treated using chemical to eliminated bacteria before it was stored into the reservoirs. The table 2 displayed the information about 25 other "non-treatment" reservoirs which is treated after the water left the reservoirs. The tables have two columns which are the measure of reservoir's surface area and the IBI score. The second aim of this research is to give recommendationThis paper has two aims. The first aim is to analyzing and evaluating the effect of surface area on the quality of water, to be more specific, the IBI score. If there are statistical evidence of other possible influences of...

How to Write a Formal Business Letter in English
How to Write a Formal Business Letter in English A formal business letter requires not only strong grammar and vocabulary, but also appropriate tone, format, and sequence. Learning how to write a professional letter in English can be difficult for non-native speakers learning how to write in business English. In this article, we will show you what to include and avoid when writing a formal letter. Finding The Correct Tone in English Formality is a tricky thing in English since it isnââ¬â¢t built into the grammar like in Spanish, French, or Japanese. Instead, it is built into our tone of voice (when speaking) and in the vocabulary we use. You can see some good examples of different levels of formality here.(The first example demonstrates the proper level of formality for a business letter.) Here is a quick tip.In general, a good rule to remember is that formal writing is a bit longer. For example: INFORMAL: Thanks! FORMAL: I appreciate â⬠¦ **Remember! This is a general rule. It is not always true. What to avoid in a formal english business letter Here are some things you should avoid in a formal letter: Emojis ââ¬â as much as I love these because they ââ¬Å"humanizeâ⬠writing, they donââ¬â¢t belong in anything formal. Exclamation points ââ¬â These make you sound like a teenage cheerleader. Acronyms like LOL or ICYMI ââ¬â these are often inappropriate (in the case of LOL) or better spelled out (in the case of ICYMI). They are also easily misunderstood (I knew someone who though LOL meant ââ¬Å"lots of loveâ⬠instead of ââ¬Å"laughing out loud.â⬠It seems like a small mistake, but it resulted in some hurt feelings when she sent LOL to someone who had just lost their grandfather. Idioms (a full list of English idioms can be found here) ââ¬â Itââ¬â¢s always better to write what you need to say plainly and directly. Idioms are also cultural and easily misunderstood or misused. Anything that sounds too friendly or intimate. Example: Nice chatting with you yesterday! Instead, write, ââ¬Å"It was good to talk with you yesterday.â⬠Sentence fragments ââ¬â Example: Looking forward to your reply.â⬠(More info here.) These are used often in speech and are usually ok in informal writing, but they donââ¬â¢t work in formal writing because the subject is of the sentence is missing. (I am looking forward to your reply.â⬠Instead, keep your focus on: Meeting your audienceââ¬â¢s needs and expectations. Remember, the receiver of your letter might not be your only audience. Other people, particular those above your intended receiver, may also see your letter. Direct, simple language. Strong, appropriate grammar. Know your grammar weaknesses and proofread carefully. If you have trouble with this, use Grammarly. Format Use block formatting. Every item is left aligned, with no indented paragraphs. There is one line of space between each item/paragraph. You can see block formatting here. Sequence Senderââ¬â¢s Address ââ¬â The first item should be the senderââ¬â¢s address without the senderââ¬â¢s name. Date ââ¬â Make sure to use the date format common to your audience and always spell out the month. More info on global date formats here. Receiverââ¬â¢s Address ââ¬â Here you need to include the receiverââ¬â¢s name, title, and company, as well as the address. Salutation ââ¬â Dear Mr./Mrs./Ms. Last name: (Ex. Dear Ms. Jones:) Body text ââ¬â This is where you include the bulk of your content. Make sure to start with the main point of your communication in the first paragraph, then include more details in the second paragraph, and close with an action eliciting conclusion in the final paragraph. Closing ââ¬â Sincerely or Best regards followed by a comma is appropriate for most formal situations. (Ex. Best regards,) Four lines of space to sign your name Your First and Last Name

Leadership Challenges and Practices Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Leadership Challenges and Practices - Essay Example n is considered to be one of the most important factors and all most all the companies look for new methods to motivate the employees and to bring out the best out of them. This paper will focus upon the different leadership behaviors and the best leadership behavior which should be adopted to meet the companyââ¬â¢s goals. Good leaders are very hard to find, good leaders know how to get the best out of others and good leaders are those who keep others motivated and focused at all times. These qualities are very hard to get in an individual but the most successful leaders are all well equipped with these great qualities. Leader effectiveness is determined by what people do, not by some inherent personal characteristic... Im not saying personal characteristics dont help; they certainly do. But leaders have to adapt their behavioral styles to fit the situations in which they find themselves" (p. 7).à Howell says the good news is most people can learn leader behaviors and learn to recognize situations in which certain behaviors are most important.à Howell and Costley (2001) argue for the match of leader behavior, leader traits and characteristics, follower characteristics, and the situation at hand.à And there are seven leader types, fit for various behavioral processes and situations in my read of their leader theory: And now we have left the obsession with one best style of leadership. There is no universal style. There is as I have suggested, a dimension of behaviors running between Transactional and Transformational. The behavior school to this point is fixated on the transactional. To find transformational we must sail to the Isle of Situation.â⬠( Howell and Costley). The same principles of Howell and Costley are elucidates in the paper. There are mainly five major behavior patterns namely, supportive behavior, directive behavior, participative behavior, reward and punishment behavior and charismatic behavior. Every behavior pattern has its own pros and

Procurement - Assignment 2 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Procurement - Assignment 2 - Essay Example ent system is vital since the correct choice may help to avoid eventualities that might negatively impact on time, costs and quality; to ensure that the projectââ¬â¢s goals are attained. One needs to consider a variety of factors from the projectââ¬â¢s internal and external environment in which the industry operates. A point to note is that different projects may require different systems based on a projectââ¬â¢s features (Hashim, Yuet, Chu, Hooi, Heng & Yong 2006). Procurement systems are divided into three categories namely; traditional, management contracting and design and build methods. These three categories have different influences on each factor. The following factors are may be considered in the construction of site in Chelmsford. Time, complexity, price certainty, government policy, price completion, responsibility, risk avoidance and familiarity of procurement methods (Hashim, Yuet, Chu, Hooi, Heng & Yong 2006). Time is of fundamental when deciding which procurement system to acquire for construction purposes. Time described here is from inception to completion stage. If the completion deadline is not met due to an inefficient procurement system, extra or overrun costs will be incurred by the contractor making the project expensive. The procurement system should monitor the lead-time schedules to ensure that the functional spaces are completed within the required time and start generating income. The client being a private firm, completion time of the project is truly crucial and of importance to them (Hashim, Yuet, Chu, Hooi, Heng & Yong 2006). Therefore, the procurement system must be comprehensive in planning and its schedules to achieve deadlines and other timelines required. Time as a factor is affected by the given procurement methods in the following ways. Design and build method is advantageous for a client who wants a quick return on their investment. The client may employ manageme nt contracting method in order to reduce the project

Exclusionary rule Essay Example for Free
Exclusionary rule Essay The exclusionary rule is one that continues to stir up conflicting opinions not only between political parties, but also among the members of the judicial machinery and scholarly community. Professor Yale Kamisar argues that the exclusionary rule which exempts illegally solicited evidence from being used in court is the cornerstone to protecting innocent citizensââ¬â¢ civil right, since it would discourage the police from using morally questionable methods to gather evidence. Judge Guido Calabresi, on the other hand, feels that the said rule serves as a loophole for criminals to get away scot-free (2003, pg. 112). He also acknowledges the fact the police officials often have concealed or twisted facts to escape from the exclusionary rule. However, he suggests that direct action or tort suits maybe pursued against police officers that wrongfully gather evidence. Kamisar feels that these alternative remedies are often ineffective since the jury process is not very transparent and clear. We have witnessed government agencies including the police force almost assuming absolute authority, as the pressure to enforce homeland security has gradually increased. The law of search and seizure is broadening by the day, as new court judgments push the boundaries of conducting a search. Hence, the police are almost free to conduct a search based on ââ¬Å"reasonable suspicionâ⬠which is quite a subjective term. Thus, it is highly improbable for a real criminal to get away clean, unless there has been gross negligence or incompetency on the part of the police force (Kamisar, 2003). Some members of the judiciary also argue that the exclusionary rule has itself served as a barrier to development of a suitable alternative. However, Kamisar feels that many states that had not adopted exclusionary rule for several decades are yet to come up with a proper solution. Kamisarââ¬â¢s concerns are certainly valid as the police force which is supposed to enforce the law, have been bending the law to meet their ends. Hence, he concludes that the exclusionary rule is only existing fair solution, until a working alternative is developed.

AIDS and the Catholic Church :: HIV Religion Christianity Essays
AIDS and the Catholic Church As the AIDS epidemic in the United States advanced into the 1990s, it became clear that AIDS had a new target population. AIDS was no longer strictly a gay disease but was leaking into the general heterosexual population as well. Moreover, as the decade progressed, new cases of HIV infection were being increasingly identified in poor, minority communities. While the focus of the AIDS epidemic shifted from the high-profile male homosexual population to poor, minority communities, political activism and financial support for the fight against AIDS also began to decline. With the new limitations set by decreased public support and decreased financial resources, policy-makers, humanitarian organizations, and AIDS activists began to analyze how best to extend AIDS-related resources to these new target populations. The US Hispanic community is one such population for which new methods of AIDS programming is being sought. Hispanics comprise a rapidly growing portion of the US minority population but are still over-represented among new cases of HIV infection. According to the CDC, "In 2000, Hispanics represented 13% of the US population (including residents of Puerto Rico), but accounted for 19% of the total number of new US AIDS cases reported that year (8,173 of 42,156 cases)" (CDC 1). In contrast to the gay male communities of San Francisco and New York in the 1980s, Hispanics are lacking the financial resources to combat the spread of AIDS in their communities. As a matter of fact, the Hispanic poverty rate of 20% given by the US Census Bureau is about three times that of caucasians. Thus, it is likely that support for combating the spread of AIDS within the Hispanic population must come from an outside third party. Few institutions are in as ideal a position as the Catholic Church to address the AIDS epidemic in the US Hispanic community. A statistic from The Catholic Almanac says that 80% of US Hispanics are catholic, and hence the Catholic Church has a very influential presence in the Hispanic community. As a community-based institution with international backing, a catholic community church can draw on the resources of its arch-diocese to address community-specific issues. Therefore, an AIDS campaign disseminated through the catholic church would not necessarily rely on the financial support of those communities it benefits most -- namely poor, Hispanic communities. Such a campaign, the National Catholic AIDS Network, was established in 1989 as a resource for all catholic communities dealing with the struggle against AIDS.

Material Science Essay
Abstract In this assignment I will be defining the 3 essential properties of every material and describing those. I would also be describing how silicon-based semiconductors revolutionized computing. I will also define what microchips are and how they relate to integrate circuits. Since the pressing questions about the increasing ability of computers to quickly process large amounts of information is whether a computer can be built that is considered ââ¬Å"aliveâ⬠or ââ¬Å"conscious.â⬠I will also be defining artificial intelligence and telling the difference between the human brain and the central processing unit of a computer. Material Science There are three essential properties of every material that scientists use as a foundation for most every study. First it is the kind of atoms that is made up from the material. There are the neutral elements and the compound elements. The neutral elements would have the identical amount of protons and electrons; this would essentially terminate one another, which would leave the protons and electrons neutral. The compound element is when there is a combination of more than one element. The atoms are second in the way that they are arranged. A great way to explain this is by relating atoms of liquid and atoms of solids. For example the atoms of liquids move around allowing the atoms of solids which are packed together. The way that atoms are attached together is number three. These are the key properties when understanding the study of materials. The strong point of the material, this is the capability to endure forces being useful to it without breaking, this is first. The materials elasticity is second, which is the capability to flex while returning to its original form. Number three is the materials plasticity; this is the ability to change its shape forever. Thanks to the starter of semiconductors, computers have developed over a billion times faster than one of the first built in 1946 (ENIAC). Describe how silicon-based semiconductors revolutionized computing. Since silicone semiconductors are capable to move easily through the solid component it is more proficient than copper based conductors. Silicone based conductorââ¬â¢s makes holes which produces and fills a space constantly. This means electrons jump from one atom to another. This will also change the silicon through a process called doping by adding either phosphorus or aluminum the desired effect is achieved. When adding phosphorus to silicon it develops n-type which is negative-semiconductor. When adding aluminum to silicone it develops p-type semiconductors. These are both essential parts functions efficient electrical devices microchips, which are used in computers. Microchips are positive and negative type semiconductors. Microchips do a detailed function. A microchip is individual diodes and transistors will play a big part of the essential function in modern electronics, although these strategies have been mainly replaced by much more complex arrays of P- and N- kind semiconductors, known as microchips. Microchips may join hundreds or thousands of transistors in one integrated circuit, particularly intended to do a specific role. They are related to integrated circuits this is why. Combined circuits (microchips) are the main component in devices such as microwave calculators, and other devices. An integrated circuit microprocessor lies on modern technology. Modern technology is occupied with electrical integrated circuits. Such as, Televisions, MP3 players and computers all contain integrated circuit which allows them to perform specific functions. Also known as microchips or microprocessors, these circuits keep track of all the information being transferred within the device, in essence giving it life. Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce are both who take credit with inventing the integrated circuit, both coming up with the idea within a year of each other while working for separate companies. Artificial Intelligence is a division of science which deals with helping machines and finds explanations to complex problems in a more human like manner. This normally contains borrowing features from human intelligence, and applying them as procedures in a computer friendly way. A more or less well-organized approach can be taken depending on the necessities recognized, which impacts how artificial the intelligent performance seems. (http://ai-depot.com/Intro.html) The 2 essential differences between human brains and the central processing unit of a computer is the brain-computer metaphor has served intellectual psychology well, research in intellectual neuroscience has revealed many significant changes between brains and computers. Escalating these differences may be crucial to understanding the mechanisms of neural information processing, and eventually for the creation of artificial intelligence. (http://scienceblogs.com/developingintelligence/2007/03/27/why-the-brain-is-not-like-a-co/) One difference is that brains are analogue and computers are digital. For instance one of the primary devices of information communication appears to be the amount at which neurons fire a fundamentally unbroken variable. Likewise, networks of neurons can fire in relative synchrony or in relative confusion; the coherence affects the strength of the signals received by downstream neurons. Lastly, inside each and every neuron is a leaky integrator circuit, composed of a diversity of ion channels and endlessly changing membrane potentials. (http://scienceblogs.com/developingintelligence/2007/03/27/why-the-brain-is-not-like-a-co/) Another difference is short-term memory is not like RAM. While the superficial similarities between RAM and short-term memory encouraged many early intellectual psychologists, a closer examination reveals strikingly important differences. Although RAM and short-term memory both seem to required power, short-term seems to hold only to long-term memory however. RAM holds data that is Isomorphic which is having similar appearance but different ancestry. Not like RAM, the capacity limit of short-term memory is not fixed, the capacity of short-term memory seems to vary with differences in processing speed as well as with expertise and understanding. The Search for Three Truths in the United States
With the dream of liberty and the pursuit of happiness my family has immigrated halfway around the world, from Vietnam to America. My parents fled to the United States, not for them but for the unending opportunities for their children. My parents have sacrificed their whole live for their children to have freedom and a bright future, regardless of any difficulties. My parentâ⬠s sacrifices are the motivation that pushed me to higher level of education because I acknowledge the amount of pain my family underwent by coming to the United States by extracting the maximum amount of knowledge in my undergraduate studies. I felt overwhelmed when I left Vietnam for the United States because not only did I have to learn a new language, I needed to learn a new philosophy, one completely the opposite of what the communist had taught me. It wasnâ⬠t that hard to forget the corrupt philosophy and learn a new philosophy, but it takes time to learn a new language, especially during childhood. It was very difficult for a child to keep his native language and to learn a second language and expect him to fluent in both languages. So I struggled with the English language throughout my elementary and middle school, but I knew if I put effort into studying, eventually I would be able to overcome my language difficulties. I worked assiduously throughout my high school career and received almost straight Aâ⬠s in Honors and AP classes. While I may not have had much opportunity for advancement or education in Vietnam, in the U.S I placed my education and future as my ambition. My family fled to the United States with a dream to search for three truths: life, liberty, and happiness. We are very fortunate to find these ââ¬Å"truthsâ⬠, however, along the way there were many hardships, difficulties and asperities. I am glad that these difficulties have occurred to my life because it made me a stronger person, a dedicated student, and person that has the capability of tacking problems to matter how great.

Modern marriage consists of an equal partnership between two individuals. However, in the nineteenth-century setting in which Henrik Ibsen set his play, ââ¬Å"A Dollââ¬â¢s House,â⬠marriage was an institution with strict social standards of the roles for both men and women. Men were the independent providers, and women were the caretakers, dependent on their men. The marriage between Nora and Torvald Helmer is an example of these roles, and demonstrates the consequences of breaking with the traditions, for which neither one is responsible. When Nora borrows the money, she steps outside of her traditional, dependent role, which leads her to the realization that her role in her marriage to Torvald does not fulfill her as an individual, and she decides to leave her home and the situation that she has created, hoping to start her life again and live independently. Women in the nineteenth century were expected to live as dependents, first as daughters, and later in life as wives. Nora makes frequent references to her dependence on both her father and her husband throughout the play. For example, when Doctor Rank visits Nora in Act II, she compares her relationship with Torvald to the relationship with her father, saying to Rank: ââ¬Å"you can see how itââ¬â¢s a bit with Torvald as it is with Daddy,â⬠(760). Generational Names in the United States
Generational Names in the United States Generations in the United States are defined as social groups of people born around the same time who share similar cultural traits, values, and preferences. In the U.S. today, many people readily identify themselves as Millennials, Xers, or Boomers. But these generational names are a fairly recent cultural phenomenon and they vary depending on the source. The History of Naming Generations Historians generally agree that the naming of generations began in the 20th-century. Gertrude Stein is considered the first to have done so. She bestowed the title of Lost Generation on those who had been born around the turn of the century and bore the brunt of service during World War I. In the epigram to Ernest Hemingways The Sun Also Rises, published in 1926, Stein wrote, You are all a lost generation. Generational theorists Neil Howe and William Strauss are generally credited with identifying and naming the 20th-century generations in the U.S. with their 1991 study Generations. In it, they identified the generation that fought World War II as the G.I. (for Government Issue) Generation. But less than a decade later, Tom Brokaw published The Greatest Generation, a best-selling cultural history of the Great Depression and World War II, and that namesake stuck. Canadian author Douglas Coupland, born in 1961 at the tail end of the Baby Boom, is credited with naming the generation that followed him. Couplands 1991 book Generation X: Tales For an Accelerated Culture, and later works chronicled the lives of 20-somethings and came to be seen by some as defining that eras young. Did You Know? Generational theorists Neil Howe and William Strauss suggested the name Thirteeners (for the 13th generation born since the American Revolution) for Generation X, but the term never caught on. Credit for naming the generations that followed Generation X is less clear. In the early 1990s, the children following Generation X were often referred to as Generation Y by media outlets like Advertising Age, which is credited with first using the term in 1993. But by the mid-90s, as buzz about the turn of the century grew, this generation was more often referred to as Millennials, a term Howe and Strauss first used in their book. The name for the most recent generation varies even more. Some prefer Generation Z, continuing the alphabetical trend begun with Generation X, while others prefer buzzier titles like Centennials or the iGeneration. Generation Names While some generations are known by one name only, such as the Baby Boomers, names for other generations is a matter of some dispute among experts.à Neil Howe and William Strauss define recent generational cohorts in the U.S. this way: 2000 to present: New Silent Generation or Generation Z1980 to 2000: Millennials or Generation Y1965 to 1979: Thirteeners or Generation X1946 to 1964:à Baby Boomers1925 to 1945: Silent Generation1900 to 1924: G.I. Generation The Population Reference Bureauà provides an alternate listing and chronology of generational names in the United States: 1983 to 2001: New Boomers1965 to 1982: Generation X1946 to 1964: Baby Boomers1929 to 1945: Lucky Few1909 to 1928: Good Warriors1890 to 1908: Hard Timers1871 to 1889: New Worlders The Center for Generational Kinetics lists the following five generations who are currently active in Americas economy and workforce: 1996 to present: Gen Z,à iGen, or Centennials1977 to 1995:à Millennialsà or Gen Y1965 to 1976: Generation X1946 to 1964: Baby Boomers1945 and before: Traditionalists or Silent Generation Naming Generations Outside the United States Its worth remembering that the concept of social generations like these is largely a Western notion and that generational names are often influenced by local or regional events. In South Africa, for example, people born after the end of apartheid in 1994 are referred to as the Born-Free Generation. Romanians born after the collapse of communism in 1989 are sometimes called the Revolution Generation.à Sources Brokaw, Tom. Mall of America Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Mall of America - Case Study Example Some of the criteria that the Mall of America should consider when adding new facilities to its complex include the retail mix offered and family focus (Kotler and Keller, 2008). Previous successes already indicate that the mall is a haven for whole focus, so new facilities must be able to add to the qualities it already has. For example, retail stores should be evaluated depending on the kind of services that it introduces into the complex. For example, if apparel has already been catered for, the complex should focus on bringing in new qualities that ensure that all aspects of the consumer are covered. On entertainment offerings, since the area of children is already covered, the Mall of America should go for gender segmentation. Finally, hotels should be able to offer factors like lodging, which will be a factor for encouraging tourists to visit the location. The Mall of America is already a huge success with the local people, but to increase its presence both for the local metrop olitan visitors and visitors from outside, the mall should utilize the importance of marketing information. With specific information from patrons, the mall will be able to figure out any new needs that the consumers have, which will then be used to increase market share. The mall should also diversify on product coverage in order to cover as many demographics as possible, which will also help in attracting new clients and retaining old ones from the metropolis and outside.

Ethiscal Situations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Ethiscal Situations - Essay Example If a promise is broken or not kept, the bonds of trust can quickly disappear. During this discussion I would be careful to be as polite as possible. There is a chance that the unkept promise is simply an oversight: the manager should have the opportunity to correct himself or provide an explanation for his behaviour. It is important in such a situation to remain polite and calm and not to throw around judgmental language. It is never right to take advantage of a new employee. Joining a work force can be an anxious period for a new worker and they should be supported by their colleagues, not manipulated or abused. Employees must work together for a common purpose and it is important that they trust one another. If, on the first day, an employee is taken advantage of, that goes to the core of the bond between employees. If I observed such a course of action unfolding, I would do everything in my power to bring it to the attention of management. It is unethical to take advantage of people for any reason, and it badly affects relationships in the workplace. It is important to treat all people with respect whether they are new employees or old. Such a course of behaviour almost certainly would reflect a deeply destructive culture in that particular workplace and should be addressed
